Having blazed a trail in the mid eighties with their DJ-led mix of breakbeats and flowing Eastern grooves - a trail that the so-called "Asian Underground" followed in droves - this British Asian collective released two compelling, intelligent albums, 1999's One and One is One and 2002's We Are Three. Celebratory and devotional, progressive and respectful, these albums were raved over by the critics and clubbers alike and are considered key moments in the development of UK-based Asian music.
These two young brothers from Brick Lane that were mixing James Brown with Asian instruments were up for a good time but at the same time they had a point to make - that they are English as well as Asian and that music is music and if they didn't see any barriers why should anyone else? It seems simple but it was pretty revolutionary at the time! Sadly one of the brothers, Haroon, died suddenly just as the debut album came out and this of course affected the development of the second album - which became a more chilled out, respectful album than it might have.
But now Farook is back with Joi's 3rd album, Without Zero...and what a return it is. Full of energy, fun, amazing playing, great hooks, and contemporary beats it kicks the arse of much of the music that is coming from the old Asian Underground and from the new Asian Overground!
Joi will be out dj'ing around the country at clubs, parties and mela's during the spring.
