Synopsis
The story revolves around Rukhsana, a well-known playback singer, and her daughter Tehzeeb, who since childhood has nursed a grudge against her mother.

Tehzeeb suspects that her mother, a flamboyant personality – who has always been gossiped about in the magazines and newspapers – had something to do with the sudden death of her father.

Tehzeeb’s father was killed with a gunshot and Rukhsana was tried in court for murder but was declared not guilty.

Tehzeeb has grown up and married against her mother’s wishes to a novel writer. Rukhsana, in her 50s now, continues to be a popular singer in Bombay but has to keep pace with the trends in music. From ghazals she has to switch to disco remixes.

Tehzeeb stays far away from Mumbai in a beach-house with her husband. Ever since her marriage, she has not seen her mother for five years.

Rukhsana the mother is lonely and wishes to make amends with her daughter. On an impulse, Rukhsana decides to visit her daughter and son-in-law for a few days.

The mother and daughter are very polite and sweet with each other initially. But the tension between them surfaces. Tehzeeb confronts her mother with all her pent-up feelings. Tehzeeb resolves to find out whether her father was murdered or not.

An emotional storm gathers as the mother and daughter face each other. Tehzeeb will be satisfied with the truth and nothing but the truth.

The other pivotal characters in the story besides Rukhsana the mother, Tehzeeb the daughter and her husband the writer, are Tehzeeb’s younger sister Nazneen who lives with her.

Nazneen has also longed for her mother’s love but the mother has been unable to cope with her demands, as she is far too busy trying to hold on to her career.

A lecherous film producer, a rival playback singer to Rukhsana, a prying yellow journalist who wants to revive the murder case, and a sensuous woman who’s the publisher of the husband’s novel and also deeply attracted to him, are the supporting characters in the tightly-constructed screenplay.

The climax packs in a surprise and is emotionally moving. The aim of the film is to delve into relationships, comment on the disintegrating family structure today and underscore the state of modern life that has become extremely need-based.

The film calls for a bond of trust and love in every home and explores the concept of a working mother who is completely career-motivated. Throughout the emphasis is on making a film that is sensible and entertaining, cast completely in the format of a high voltage emotional thriller.

Six songs have been integrated into the plot besides several essential touches of humour and glamour. The aim is to shoot the entire film in a span of two months at a stretch and release the film by mid-2003.

The story, screenplay and direction are by Khalid Mohamed (who directed Fiza and wrote Zubeida). The cinematography is by India’s leading cinematography Santosh Sivan, the set designs by the award-winning Sarmishtha Roy, editing by A. Sreekar Prasad and the music by A.R. Rehman with lyrics by Javed Akhtar.

Green Card Fever is the story of a young immigrant from India (Vikram Dasu) who overstays his US visa. As he is forced to make decisions about whom to trust, he naively relies on his new found friends in his land of dreams, and a comical and poignant sequence of adventures ensue.

He is told that "the fastest way to get anything done in America is to sue somebody" - and is led to believe that he can obtain a 'Green Card' by suing his lawyer (Deep Katdare). He is emboldened by anecdotes of a "famous hot coffee cup spilling case" where he is told that a court awarded the plaintiff a million dollars (for each thigh!)

However, his plans soon begin to go awry when he falls in love with a beautiful girl (Purva Bedi). His quick ticket to the "good life" in America gets greatly complicated and he encounters Love, Lies and The Law in his pursuit to live legally in America. As he muddles through and finds himself manipulated by immigrant taxi drivers and lawyers, he is torn between the beautiful girl he is falling in love with, and the comforting prospect of returning home to India.

The story written by Suparn Verma is largely inspired by the real-life 1999 Flight IC-814 hijack and since of late we have had a quite a few films against the backdrop of terrorism and Kashmir, Zameen gives you a feeling of déjà vu. A leader of a terrorist outfit Zaheer Khan (Mukesh Tiwari) arrested by the Indian army has to be traded with the lives of the passengers of an Indian Airways flight grounded in Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir. Colonel Ranjit Singh Ranawat (Ajay Devgan is fast replacing the Punjab da puttar Sunny Deol in the 'Mera Bharat Mahan' dialogue department) joins hands with ACP Jai (Abhishek Bachchan), who heads the anti-terrorism squad in the rescue mission of the hijacked plane. Then there are the usual clichés - a mole in the Indian army, five young Pakistani terrorists coming to Mumbai for the mission aided by an Indian professor, a garage owner and the likes. Also the thing about Jai's past which haunts him. An ex-military officer, Jai had committed a mistake which cost nine lives for which his then chief Ranvir had demanded his resignation. Jai had then joined the police force to erase that blot on his character. After some superbly shot car and helicopter chases and some splendid action scenes - Ajay Devgan seems to have largely inspired Abhishek in those - Zahir Khan is killed with the terrorists in Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir while the Indian army commandoes rescue the passengers.

Love sick Kishore ever bore the humiliation of becomming an ordinary servant in Thakur Arjunsingh's (Asha brother) household all this a vague hope to recieve a sweet smile, a kind look from Asha. If only he could get it he could bear all the ill-treatment of her brother with a smile on his lips. But when Thakur Arjunsingh came to know of their secrat love he got infuriated and sizzled with rage and vengance. How dare an ordinary servant make love to a rich man's sister? Money is no respector of love. Thakur tried to kill Kishore but asha came to his rescue. Then only the Thakur realized that Asha was also madly in love with Kishore, and he resorted to the old tactices of rich people. He placedn a condition before Kishore which he readily agreed but?

It does not mean that Kishore could not fulfill his promise. He could de anything for Asha. Even the impossible could be made possible. A true lover can bring down stars from the skies. he can bear hardships, tyranny and sorrow with a smile but what he cannot bear, the unfaithfulness of beloved.

Asha did not betray Kishores love. As could be expected the yoke of convention satisfied her love. Her body could be sold but not her sole. That remained Kishore's. Philistines might call Ahsa unfaithful but in this way Laila and Heer were also Unfaithful. and if they were not then certainly Asha did not betray Kishores love. Her love is immoral.
